Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience

Cincinnati, Ohio

June - November 2022

“If you hear a voice within you say, 'you cannot paint,’ then by all means, paint, and that voice will be silenced.” -Vincent Van Gogh

Art & Life - Rediscover Art

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience provides a new way to discover art. The first floor of the exhibit includes, not only information about Vincent Van Gogh’s life and influences, but also a 3-dimensional video display of many of his flower paintings. He painted a subject many times with each time displaying a completely different feeling, such as the Sunflowers. Van Gogh was partially colorblind which is why he used such vibrant colors in his paintings.

Van Gogh created over 2,000 works of art during his 37 year life with the majority of it created in the last 10 years, averaging a new piece every 36 hours. He was born March 30, 1853 in the Netherlands and died at his own hands on July 29, 1890 in France. His many health issues, including bouts of hallucinations, epilepsy and psychosis, caused him to spend many of his later years in and out of an asylum.

Not many artists in the Netherlands studied Japanese art but in the second half of the nineteenth century in Paris, there was a large interest in everything Japanese. While in Paris, Vincent discovered japonisme. Japanese woodcuts and printmaking was one of Vincent’s main sources of inspiration and he became an enthusiastic collector, teaching him to look at the world in a new way.

Have you ever wanted to step into a painting?

The Immersive Room is one the most impressive parts of this exhibit with a 20,000 sq.ft. light and sound display featuring two-story projections of Van Gogh’s most well-known works. Have a seat and watch as the white walls & grey carpet are transformed. Two of my favorite parts are Starry Night and when the waves from The Great Wave off Kanagawa, by Japanese artist Hokusai, start flowing around the room.

Studio - Display Your Artwork

In the Studio, you can choose one of Van Gogh’s masterpieces to color. Once you are finished, take it to the scanner and project it on the walls.

Virtual Reality Experience

The virtual reality experience is an additional $5 but well worth it. Starting in The Bedroom, walk down the stairs, along the paths and through the fields of inspiration of some of Van Gogh’s most famous works. As you pass certain scenes, the painting appears over the scene, allowing you to visualize where this painting came from.
